Lammergeiers are common in the Himalayas and other northern mountains. Their wide wingspans which can measure up to 2.75-2.85m allow them to live in remote mountain strongholds at altitudes up to 7500m.
Typically lammergeiers nest in caves, ledges and low rocks rising from planes. The bird can swallow whole bones up to the size of a lambís femur. It has the habit of carrying tortoises and marrow bones to a great height and dropping them on stones to obtain the contents and is therefore called bone-breaker.
