The name of Thekkady is one that conjures up images of wild elephants, fragrant spices and unending chains of hills. One of the finest national parks of India.Periyar Wildlife Sanctuary is located in Idukki district of Kerala and is known for its exceptional beauty and diverse flora and fauna. Spread over an area of over 777 sq km amid the tropical forests of Western Ghats, the sanctuary has a rich population of Asiatic Elephants and was given the status of a tiger reserve in 1978 under the conservation programme Project Tiger. Animals like leopards, Indian bison, barking deer, langurs, wild boars and panthers can also be seen in large numbers. The sanctuary also provides its visitors with thrilling opportunities for jeep and elephant safaris to watch wildlife in action. The Periyar Lake in the middle of the sanctuary only adds to its enchanting beauty. Herds of elephants playing and bathing on the shores of the lake are a breathtaking sight and you can also take boat cruises.
