Surrounded by the majestic Western Ghats, located 30 km from the city of Nagarcoil in Tamil Nadu it is a lush green locale. The panoramic view of the Lord Mahadeva temple atop the green hills and the perennial river Kodayar flowing in front of the shrine is captivating. There are many inscriptions in the temple including one of the Pandya king dating from the 9th century. One can walk up to the top of the falls and also take boat rides in the lake behind a nearby dam. There are other places of interests also. One of them is Vattakkottai which translates as circular fort. The small serene 18th century fort overlooking the sea is 14 km from Nagarcoil.Originally built in 1600,it was rebuilt by Marthanda Varma and became a vital military station for the rulers of Travancore. The tombs of former governor-general Lord Dalhousie and his family can also be seen inside a partly-ruined chapel.
